There are those who appreciate the practicality and uniqueness of the Don Cowles design with the clip pocket sheath and rare earth magnet, but cannot justify spending hundreds of dollars for a custom piece.

For them, Don has arranged for the manufacture of his design by a competent factory. Don still installs the ruby in 14K gold in each knife, and hand-tunes each piece. He also hand-stitches each award-winning sheath, finishing them with a waterproofing of beeswax and neatsfoot oil.

• Hollow-ground 10Cr17 stainless steel (comparable to 440C) at a Rockwell hardness of 56C
• Ruby in 14K gold in ricasso
• Bone scales over tapered tang
• 416 stainless steel dovetailed bolsters
